W&M 42, Hampton 35
Nov. 29th, 2004 11:41 pm Well, my alma mater certainly believes that There's No Place Like Home for playoff football. W&M is now 3-0 all time at home and 0-6 on the road in the I-AA playoffs. So I guess it's a Good Thing that the quarterfinal round game will be at home too.
The Hampton U. game was a track meet. 77 total points, and W&M scored six touchdowns while throwing THREE interceptions. The offense is certainly working well right now! It would be a rare team indeed that could stop them from scoring lots of points. And our next opponent, Delaware, isn't known for their pass defense.
Yes, I said that our next opponent is the U. of Delaware. And yes, the Tribe's last loss was to that very team. But it was a 31-28 score, AT Delaware. The 3-point difference is the traditional value of "home field advantage." So here's to reversing that outcome this Saturday. It will likely come down to whether W&M can stop UD from scoring, as the Blue Hens will probably give up quite a few points to the Tribe's passing game (one of the best in the country).
I still can't make the game unless someone lends me a Bi-location Machine. But if all goes well Saturday against UD, and if James Madison beats Furman, then I really do want to go down to the 'Burg for a rematch against JMU.
Notes: One of the tight ends for the Tribe not only went to the same high school as I did, but I believe he's the nephew of one of my old HS band mates. He's a sophomore, and caught a touchdown pass at the Homecoming game, but I think he got hurt the following week. At least he's only a soph... Those 3 interceptions that W&M threw raised the season total number of pickoffs against the Tribe to four. Yes, FOUR. The Tribe threw only ONE interception the entire regular season! That's the fewest pickoffs thrown by any college team in several decades, and the BEST (lowest) interception-to-passes-attempted ratio by any college team since the 5-yards-to-either-side restriction was removed between the World Wars. For the regular season the Tribe also lost only 6 fumbles, for a total of just SEVEN (7) turnovers, a record for an 11-game regular season by any college team ever.
Edit: With this victory, the Tribe wins the unofficial state I-AA championship, going 5-0 against the other six I-AA teams in the state. W&M hasn't won five games in one season against in-state teams in decades. Then again, most Division I football programs in Va. don't *schedule* five (or even four) games against other Virginia teams in one season.
EBIRT OG!!!
