It took a big fourth-quarter comeback and two overtimes, but the Tribe is in the semifinals for the first time ever! Wrap from SportsNetwork.com
The regular season game between these two had W&M leaping out to a 21-7 lead, then Delaware coming back to go up 24-21; the Tribe scored to retake the lead, but Delaware got the ball last and scored for the 31-28 final. This time, it was the Blue Hens who took a 31-10 lead into the loacker room at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter, Delaware started the fourth quarter on the W&M 38 yard line, but Steve Cason picked off a screen pass and ran it 62 yards the other way for the score. The Tribe scored two more unanswered touchdowns to tie the game at 31 with two minutes to go. The teams exchanged scores in the first OT, but the Tribe defense stopped the Hens short the second extra time around for the win.
The two teams totaled just shy of 1000 total yards for the game (not counting return yardage), with W&M racking up an even 500 to UD's 491.
In the "West" bracket, Sam Houston State also made a memorable comeback, scoring three touchdowns in the last 11 minutes (the last one as time ran out on the clock) to nip Eastern Washington 35-34, and Montana whaled on New Hampshire. Montana will probably host that semifinal game.
As for W&M's opponent... With James Madison beating Furman 14-13 today, the stage is set for ANOTHER A-10 rematch in the semis. JMU will travel to the 'Burg this coming weekend.
Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to travel down to the 'Burg and play in the band for this coming weekend's semifinal game.
