(Originally posted to my GoFundMe, and backdated to the date of that original post. This is basically copied verbatim (modulo formatting), including the fundraising stuff at the end; I *was* posting to GoFundMe after all. Feel free to ignore those bits if you want. Link to the fundraiser will be provided in the comments and upon request.)
Links related to virus spread, travel, and quarantine are the subject of the first "SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 related PSA / traditional weblogging meets the usual begging post" of the summer. There's been a large increase in news about the pandemic this past week, so I'm going to split my list into two-- no, THREE posts. Maybe four if this keeps up. I'll check back in with Derek Lowe soon as well. I *did* say I might bump the frequency of these posts back up if the news warranted it!
All across the USA, states are trying to work out their strategies for reopening after the spring lockdown. Some states are demonstrably not doing it right. Other states are reacting by imposing quarantines on travelers who have been to those states.
COVID-19 cases surging in Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma
Florida, Arizona and Texas set records for new COVID-19 cases
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut to require visitors from states with high virus rates to quarantine
Coronavirus: New York imposes quarantine on eight US states
New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to quarantine visitors from coronavirus hot spots
A flight medic friend in Texas reports: "I can tell you the situation as far as ICU bed availability is heating up here [in Texas]. I flew a patient 70 miles as the crow flies for a bed, at least 20 miles further than other more capable centers, just cause that was the closest ICU bed. All of San Antonio and Austin were full."
The European Union is also trying to ease travel restrictions, but restrictions will continue for certain foreign countries... including, right now, the USA.
EU to ease COVID-19 ban on nonessential travel from July 1, with some exemptions
E.U. May Bar American Travelers as It Reopens Borders, Citing Failures on Virus
And now on to the usual begging stuff. It will come as no surprise to those who've read any of these non-photo posts in the past several weeks that next, before and in addition to the usual plea for help for ourselves, I'm going to ask those of you who are able to SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES. Most states are now in various stages of reopening after the spring lockdowns, even if that might actually be premature from a public health standpoint. Nevertheless, as things start to open up again, help keep your local economy a little bit more afloat. Locally owned businesses are, and will continue to be, struggling to get back on their feet, so please patronize them as much as you can. BUY LOCAL. Please however, do so in a safe manner. Keep on wearing masks and other protective equipment when going shopping, continue social distancing. Act intelligently, because I know you can.
( Rest of the begging section is behind the cut. )
