Paean to a bakery

Back in the fall of 1990 I was working in Sterling VA, and occasionally needed to go to a client site in Reston. Being on a very flexible schedule other than for specific meetings, I was able to bicycle to the client site when the weather was amenable; it was the most direct way from the office to the client, and I enjoyed the relative tranquility of the bike path (converted from the W&OD railbed -- here is another web site about it).
The path goes right through the middle of the town of Herndon -- the old railroad was the major reason that Herndon came about in the first place. So I was biking on the trail, came to the middle of Herndon, and there at the old Herndon train station was a sign on the trailside: "Cyclists! Fresh Bread! Free Slices! One Block Away!" and an arrow pointing at the store. I've been pedaling for a while... free snack? I was so there!
Almost 15 years later, I'm still going to the Great Harvest franchise store in Herndon. The owners are there a lot, pounding at the dough and slinging slices of bread right along with the rest of the employees. Because of S. Patrick's Day this week, along with the usual March offerings they have Irish Soda Bread. Yum!
They have expanded the offerings to include organic soup mixes and Virginia-made jams, among other things. But the heart of the operation is still the bread, which is made from scratch each morning starting with whole wheat (there's a mill in the back). They even have a low-carb bread for the fanatical low-carbers. (The low-carb bread is all right, but best eaten VERY fresh, as it gets tough faster than their other breads.) If you're in the Herndon area I heartily recommend it.
