G'bye Sylvana's, hello Med Breeze 2
May. 13th, 2005 03:30 pm I went to Great Harvest in Herndon today to pick up some stuff. A couple of doors down, there was a sign up on the awning that used to say "Sylvana's". It said "Coming Soon - Mediterranean Breeze".
A couple of months ago I had noticed that the restaurant and the building next to it had been closed for extensive renovations -- and thought that there might have been a fire or something. Turns out I was wrong; the damage was probably water from winter and early-spring storms. But the restaurant had been closed since before Thanksgiving, and I just hadn't noticed it. This article has the story of what had happened and what's led up to the "Coming Soon" banner. (As the article notes, this is the beginning of a local chain, being the second Mediterranean Breeze.)
The new restaurant looks like it's going to be a bit more upscale, and there won't be a salad bar. That is unfortunate; the salad bar at Sylvana's was one of the things I liked best about the place. Most salad bars don't include dolmades, for example. But things like this happen; just like with George's (the Campus Restaurant) in Williamsburg and the Viet Palace/Hunan Wok in Chantilly, sometimes having decent food and good value isn't enough.
