And there was BOOM.

kyleri, not that kind of boom.
The first big thunderstorm of the summer hit the DC area last evening -- much, I'm sure, to
theimp79's delight. (I say "of the summer" because we've had some boomers earlier this year, but up until now it wasn't summer here yet.) And the sign that summer has arrived in DC is that, despite hours of intermittent heavy rain and lots of flash-boom, today is going to be even hotter, humid-er, and stinkier than yesterday (which was bad enough).
The front that caused all this seems to have stalled somewhere around Pittsburgh. As a result the rain continued until well after midnight, and it was quite cloudy afterward. So the ground and roads stayed wet all night, and has now become low-level humidity you could almost wring out with a sponge. This is not what I call a "good" rain. A good summer rain is one that dumps enough water on the roads and parking lots to carry off the accumulated heat into the storm drains... then stops shortly after dark and leaves you with clear skies overnight to let the overnight temperature drop significantly. Morning comes and it's refreshingly nice until coffee-break time.
Needless to say, we don't get that much in high summer. Typical DC summer weather won't give us a "good" rain from early June until the Mid-August Monsoon (when one of the Pennsic storms actually makes it across the mountains) -- and that only helps a little until September arrives. The shitty air quality in the area makes the problem worse by holding in heat. Even Williamsburg, with all its tourist traffic, has nicer summer weather than this. (Though I'm sure there are some places in the US that are worse.)
It's this sort of weather that makes me envious of one of Tony's friends... and plugging said friend's ZIP (13692) into the Weather Underground site is kind of a ritual torture for me during the summer.
