Yesterday: wrapup
Jun. 12th, 2005 02:09 pmThis month has a microburst of SCA event-going, two events in two weeks. Yesterday was the first.
Well,
montuos has already posted a lot about it so I can keep it a bit shorter.
Friday night I decided I wasn't going to try to assemble the Traveling Book Collection of books onomastic and armorial. I'd had no word from *anybody* that there might be a consult table. But I got the garb packed, and my feast gear was already clean, and I loaded the table and chairs into the van.
I set the alarm for far to &^%$#@! early, and it did its job. Loaded the rest of the stuff (and us) into the van, and hugged Tony and wished him well at his first day at his new job. We actually left the driveway *before* 0800, when the best I'd been hoping for was between 0800 and 0830. For Highland River Melees I normally wouldn't worry so much about arriving early... but this year I was part of the Great Gruffudd Conspiracy, and I wanted to get there as early as possible. Stopped for breakfast (and, more importantly, coffee) a few miles outside Hagerstown, so had only a short jaunt left to get to the site, a lovely park with the historic Hager House in it. Unloaded the stuff, then moved the van up to the parking lot.
By the time I got back down the hill to start hauling stuff I was already dripping wet. It was hot yesterday. And humid. Did I mention the humidity? Karen had expected to get there around 11 or so, so I was quite surprised to find that they were there already. But Gruffy was elsewhere, so we helped Ranulf set the vigil pavilion, plus the stuff in and around it... just in time for morning court, where Gruffy's getting put on vigil was the last item of the session.
Unfortunately, a couple of the items for starting the vigil had not arrived, so we improvised without them. The reception food had also not arrived (same person); by the time it did, one of the buffet tables had been commandeered for other purposes, so our little 3-foot-diameter folding picnic table ended up holding all the reception food. I'm glad we brought it! All told, spent a couple of hours outside the vigil tent talking to
strawberrykaren and Ranulf, and some other folks who I hadn't seen in a long time, all of us soaking our garb clean through in the heat and humidity of the day. I can only hope that next week will have less humidity. (Less heat would also be nice, but I'll cope better if the sweat actually evaporates off my skin! Humidity sinply makes it impossible for sweat to perform its actual function.)
Oh, and I finally met
icewolf010 -- or at least I finally talked to her for more than ten seconds -- and this morning my brain finally made the connection with her LJ userID!
About 2-ish I went to use the restroom (having finally gotten myself hydrated enough). On the way back, stopped at Heralds Point, where
pedropadrao,
weatherman2111, Alanna, and Thyra were hanging out. My arrival seemed to coincide with the first burst of significant business they'd had all day, and I ended up spending almost two hours there helping out. Beatrix, Pedro's successor as herald for Storvik, came by during that time -- always nice to see her -- and Devora also made a short appearance before going off to hover at the Silent Auction (she did end up getting mostly everything she'd bid on).
Then it was time for evening court, where once again we waited until the last item; then I and the other Pelicans gathered around
severus_bracae and he was Officially Flipped The Bird.
vikingsparrow did the scroll if I remember correctly. (EDIT 13 June: She did his banner. Master Tristan did the scroll. My oops.) Sorry you couldn't be there Aimee, the scrollbanner is lovely. Then it was time to strike the vigil tent and surroundings. Feast followed as
montuos described. I was asked if we'd be staying to dance, but the heat and humidity and whatnot had taken its toll, so we loaded up the van and wearily headed home. I'm kind of looking forward to camping at SRWC next month, when I won't be leaving the site until Sunday.
Weather aside, it was a good day.
