Tony and I went to multiple banks today for a variety of reasons. The most efficient route happens to go right by the Fairfax Wegmans, so we stopped there to pick up some stuff. I found some really nice-looking thin asparagus, even if it was a bit shorter than I'm used to seeing at Wegmans. Brought it home to cook it as part of lunch...

...and that's when I knew the season was over. First off, the price had gone up from two bucks per pound to three. Second, despite their being thin and looking nice, I had to snap off an inordinate amount from the bottoms... the bottoms were all woody and basically inedible. I expect this of longer thicker asparagus, not of the thin stuff when it's this short. But apparently even the *Canadian* supplier is hitting the very end of their asparagus growing season, and this is what you get.

It's kind of surprising that I could still get even semi-decent asparagus in July, though. So I bid a fond farewell to fresh asparagus for the year... unless Wegmans finds a South American supplier in September.
