The weekend past: University
So, we spent this past weekend in Tidewater Virginia. As I mentioned in earlier posts, I knew the weekend would feel a bit odd due to our going to Courtland, where I had my first fulltime job, and to Williamsburg, where I once lived and often wish I still did.
Friday afternoon we got off to a late start, but
montuos (who was driving) asked if there was a way around the quickly clogging traffic on I-95, and we ended up going the long way around, west of Quantico Marine Base. It's longer milewise, but the expected travel time is pretty consistent because there's rarely enough traffic to slow you down. (As opposed to I-95 and US-1, which can *really* suck, and worse, can often change quickly from "okay" to "suck".)
Got to Williamsburg, checked in at our timeshare, went off to dinner. Shortly after we got back,
sister_devora and
pedropadrao showed up. Got them settled in, and waited for the arrival of
luscious_purple, who had previously called just before leaving her place to head down. I had one of the evening shower shifts (two bathrooms, five people, so two of us opted for bathing before bed) so was a bit late getting to bed.
Saturday, Pedro and I went out to transfer stuff in the middle of the heaviest rain of the morning. Okay, it was narsty, but I'd rather have been moving the books in it than *driving* in it. The rain slacked off, and we got all five of us (plus stuff) into Moishe, and left a little after eight. I drove everywhere on Saturday because I knew the area. Caught the 0830 ferry across the James, and hauled ass along my old route to work, such that we got to the site shortly after 0915. I started the day with a class on period games using backgammon sets (including one game very close to modern backgammon). Then taught two sections of "Heraldic Consulting Practicum" sandwiched around the lunch-and-Convocation period, during which I picked up my (long backlogged) Golden Dolphin scroll. Lunch period also featured a ceremony in which Michel von Schonsee became Dame Gwenllian's protegé, with a bountiful reception spread provided by
cariola. After that, I took one class in Italian dances and one in intermediate English country dances, with an hour between at the consult table to rest my feet.
The highlight of the day was getting to see
giselle0002 for the first time in what feels like forever. She now lives in the same SCA kingdom as we do, but is about three times as far away from us. She was unable to stay for dinner and post-revel (sigh), so I didn't get to see her nearly as much as I'd have liked. Better luck next time. We did find out that Atlantia will be having a kingdom Heraldic(/Scribal?) Collegium, on May 13th (the day before Mothers Day) in Durham NC. I'd hoped it would be closer to Gise's place than that, but I'll take what I can get, and we'll have more time then. That event does load up the calendar for May though, such that I'll probably skip Spring Crown Tourney just to have a weekend to breathe. (Crown is on the 6th, then Heraldic Collegium on the 13th, then AE War Practice on the 20th, and either Alles Faire or Sapphire Joust/Atlantian 25th Birthday on the 27th. And June-iversity is the weekend after that, though I don't know right now where it's going to be.)
Once classes let out, we packed our stuff up and loaded up the van and headed off to Franklin for dinner. Courtland really doesn't have much in the way of decent food, and Franklin is only 10-15 minutes away. We made one pass up the commercial strip and settled on the same place we ate at 2 years ago:
montuos remembered it first, and once I saw the decorations on the wall I remembered it too. It's a local joint specializing in BBQ and other down-home style cooking. We even stayed for dessert, during which it rained a helluva lot outside, but the storm blew on through before we were finished. Having stuffed ourselves, we headed back to the site for the post-revel, though
montuos and
sister_devora stayed in the van to snooze a bit. Pedro and I ended up dancing (repeating many of the dances I'd done in class that day), and I at least had a good time there, so I thank the ladies for letting us go back. The post-revel was *very* lightly attended, possibly owing to the earlier heavy rains deterring folks from returning; also, more out-of-town folks seemed to be treating this event as a day-trip (or as a Friday-overnight-only); we also heard tales of another postrevel being held elsewhere. I like this site for Universities, *except* that it's not convenient for going out for dinner and then coming back for a postrevel afterwards.
The postrevel at the school ended at 2100, and with some prodding we quickly headed back to Williamsburg. I tried to use a slightly different (and nominally straighter) route, which ended up taking longer. Maybe next time I'll remember not to go that way; maybe writing it down in my LJ will help me remember. Got to the ferry in time anyway, and caught the 2200 run back to Jamestown; went up Jamestown Road, "around the horn", and up Richmond Road, just to see parts of the campus. It occurred to me that I may not get back to the 'Burg until Homecoming this year, which would be very odd, especially after having gone there so often in 2005 (*six* trips!). Got back to the condo a little after 2230, and was asleep shortly after midnight.
Slept in (meaning, no alarm; got up about 0930), took our time getting ourselves together and over to the Peking-B-Q. Had a very nice lunch, including getting plenty of The One True General Tso's Chicken, and also the spinach. (The fried eggplant, however, is apparently out of season *whine*.) Went back to the condo, finished packing, loaded up the van, and headed home.
montuos again drove, and got us home in time to catch
fuzzface00's show on WKoL although he had some technical difficulties early on.
It was a good weekend. Got to see many people I hadn't seen in far too long (including too many LJers to enumerate). As I pointed out to someone late last week, it had been a year and a week since I'd gone to an Atlantian event south of Stierbach. Next weekend's plans are still very much up in the air, with potential weather playing a major role.
