Dora Sue failed her inspection on Friday: rear brakes needed work. By the time the brakes were done the inspection place was closed, so the earliest I could get the re-inspection done would be Monday. Not a big deal. (EDIT 07Jun06: Not at the time, anyway.)

Going to University of VirginiaAtlantia on Saturday was great, other than having to get up Way Too EarlyTM. Mandi (Brienna) had come down from the other side of Baltimore to crash and ride with us; three in the car makes it easier to avoid emitting too many sleep rays. Once we got there, I was back in my old stomping grounds in Isenfir -- I was mistaken for a current local more times than I could count! We set up the heraldic consultation table out on the porch across from the Troll Gate, and did a fair bit of business. The weather was beautiful, just right for being out on the porch: we got most of the nice effects of the air circulation without having papers whisked around by breeze. Gwenllian spent a lot of her day at the table; poor G, all three of the classes she wanted to take were scheduled at the same time -- AND at the same time as the class she was teaching! I worked the table from start to about 2:30, including teaching one class right at the table. I also taught another heraldry class, sandwiched in between two dance classes. We introduced "Heralds In Love" (choreographed by a fellow Isenfiri-in-exile, tune by [livejournal.com profile] hrj) to some Northern Atlantians; Gwenllian and I hope it'll grow in popularity up our way.

I noticed something while working the consult tables on Saturday. [livejournal.com profile] sister_devora said (in a locked post and on a different topic) that on a local level, one "is close to the ground", can see people's faces, knows the *intended* message, and can gauge from the faces whether delivery of that message is successful; and it doesn't scale up a thousandfold because there just isn't time and space enough for one person to reach a thousand times the number of people on the same level. Working consult tables with Gwenllian, first at Gulf Wars and then yesterday at University, reminded me that I must consciously remember to *scale back* -- this isn't a Wreath meeting, we don't have to plow through a zillion submissions in eight hours, I can take my time to explain things in more detail. I'm comfortable with both gears; I just have to remember to get in the correct gear. I'm not sure Gwenllian was ever totally comfortable being in Wreath gear, and she looks a LOT happier not having to do it.

I got to meet some new folks, said hello to tons of people -- far more than I can count, much less enumerate; even those with LJ's were as thick on the ground as mud in Mad Bowl in a rainy spring (to use a very U.Va. metaphor). Massive hugs to *everyone*.

This was also Reunions Weekend for U.Va. -- the big annual alumni gathering weekend. Knowing that the eateries on the Corner would therefore be swamped by alumni, we headed north out of town a bit and ate at one of the buffet-style places. There were six SCAdians at one table and five at the table behind us; five of the Wolfhou clan eventually came in as others were leaving. One of the assistant managers asked me what group we were with, which is better than "are you in a play?" I suppose -- I got to explain what we were about, and that there was a local group if they had more interest. After a satisfying meal we headed home.

Sunday was just a day of relaxation, partially enforced by Dora Sue being out of commission until at least Monday. But I very much liked having the chance just to hang with [livejournal.com profile] montuos, especially on one of our anniversaries.

Today I discovered that the car inspector was out sick (for a re-inspection you have to go back to the same person) so Dora Sue is out of commission until at least Tuesday. It's only a minor irritation though, as long as I can get the re-inspection done in the next couple of days. (EDIT 07Jun06: The inspector has now been out sick three straight days. This is no longer "not a big deal", dammit.)
