First off, welcome to
shalandara and
whouseknecht!
When last I posted, I was about to head south to Williamsburg via Kinsale and Tappahannock, for family visits and eye appointments and College Homecoming. Stuff has happened since then. Thursday: too late a night the night before, stuff didn't get done, stuff got left behind. Arrived at the Good Eats Café outside Kinsale in good time though. Dinner was good; we spent the night at
montuos's family home with her mother.
Friday: uncomfy bed, too early a morning. Eye appointments went without incident: my eyes haven't changed enough to require a different 'scrip from last year. Mind you, I still have to get my glasses updated to last year's 'scrip. Got to the 'Burg in time for lunch at the Cheese Shop, went to check in at the timeshare, and then everything just sort of crashed. Didn't get up from the nap in time to eat before the band rehearsal, so skipped the rehearsal. Dinner at Pierce's Pitt BBQ, then over to the band concert, where I played the second half without having seen the music before. I managed pretty well though.
Saturday: the bed at Fairfield is uncomfy too, waaaaaay too soft. Far too early a morning. Parade was a bit wet to start, and the instrument mix was the usual sparse oddness we get for the parade. Pep Band played well at the game, as did we in the Alumni Band, but the football team sucked just a little too much and too often. On my way over to assemble for out little corner of the halftime shoe, I saw Debbie, one of only two classmates I ever seriously expect to see at Homecoming; our usual quick hug and hi-how-are-you ensued. A bit later I got to do the same with Dianne, the other of the aforementioned two classmates. After the game I went to the alumni reception for Phi Mu Alpha and Nu Kappa Epsilon, where I saw
djproject. Dinner at the Peking-B-Q, then everyone else crashed while I went to the rehearsal and the Choir concert. Two other Phi Mu Alpha's from my era were present there: Chris (who was in the band; odd to have him singing with the choir), and Jerry (along with his wife and fellow choir alum Rashna). I hadn't seen Jerry and Rashna in a looooong time!
Sunday: slow start. We did get in a round of mini-golf before leaving though, with many of the usual hijinks included, though no attempts to send a golf ball into orbit this time... We stopped for ice cream at the Bruster's in the 'Burg on our way out of town, and headed home. The week since then was distinguished mostly by things involving automobiles. I took Dora Sue in for routine stuff on Monday, and Moishe got a couple new tires on Wednesday. During the latter process it was discovered that Moishe's brakes and cooling system needed work before he'd pass inspection, so that will be the next thing to happen.
One sad note, though -- I noted in my last post that my parents' cat KC was dying of some sort of age-related kidney disease. As
wednesday1971 pointed out here, KC died on Monday the 30th. He didn't seem to have experienced a whole lot of pain from it: he was moving and leaping about as well as his old arthritic hip would let him, even in that last week. But he'd pretty much stopped eating. As much as he and I often didn't get along, I'm sorry to see him go. When Pandora and Whisper move to Calif. in two weeks (taking my sister and her family with them), the house will be catless. That in itself will feel very strange.
Yesterday I daytripped down to Atlantian Crown Tourney. Count Valharic (who'd been King of the Middle once) won the tournament, fighting for Duchess Arielle (who's been Queen of Atlantia twice before). Valharic beat Vlad (he of the Spike-menacing otters) in the finals. I spent most of my time there talking to one of my earlist SCA friends ever, who lives and works fairly close to where the event was held. Quotable quote: we were walking outside to see the finals but missed the announcement of who was fighting -- but as soon as I saw the one guy's shield and the other's tabard, I said to my friend "That one's Valharic, and that one's Vlad. See? Heraldry works!"
And now it's off to find Sunday brunch...
