Why the "We have tubas" logo is on this post: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1760484/
(And the tubist's home page: http://www.baadsvik.com/ ) Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] liadan_m for the link.

Also on the same site, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] math5 and [livejournal.com profile] edelweiss68: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1775922 -- warning, this one may be NSFW.

After getting off the plane the weekend before last, my first destination was the restroom (big surprise, that). In that restroom I discovered spontaneous-flush toilets. I sat down on the seat, and about 15 seconds later... *flush*. And 20 seconds after that, *flush*. The silly thing flushed *NINE* times while I was still sitting. Then I got up, and it *waited* 10 seconds before the automatic flush kicked in!

The other day I was filling out an online form... and down at the end of the form, there was a text box labeled "Signature:". I was *so* tempted to put "Attempting to sign this online form would only result in pen marks on my monitor and you *STILL* wouldn't receive my signature." Seriously, what are they expecting people to put in that text box? There's a separate place for "Name" after all.

"TV Sign-off Clip of the Week" this week at http://www.tv-signoffs.com/ is from WPVI-TV Channel 6 in Philadelphia. The video clips appear to have been taken in the late 1960's, judging from the cars we see (I don't see any '70s models), but the audio is from the early 1970's (the call letters changed from WFIL-TV in 1971). This is the signoff clip I remember from middle and high school and was still in use in 1986 when this particular recording was made. (Channel 6 signed off at 0130 or 0200 back then.)

From Brian Westfall and Tim Keeble of TSN in this article discussing the recent Women's World Cup in soccer: "WORST CARD: Shannon Boxx, United States vs. Brazil - Boxx was clipped from behind by Brazil's Cristiane, who then fell to the ground and celebrated as referee Nicole Petignat held up a red card. Took away any chance the United States had at mounting a comeback." Well, to be honest, I think the USA would have lost anyway. (Putting Scurry in goal was a boneheaded move on the coach's part, for starters.) However, after seeing the films, I say that Cristiane deserves an Academy Award... plus a fine and a 3-game suspension. Petignat (the ref) deserves a 1-year total suspension, and to be disqualified from all World Cup and Olympic ref'ing until the end of 2012. Harsh? Well, while that may not be the worst call in history, it's the worst call I've ever seen ... and I've been watching soccer sporadically for 30 years. It's not often that a call makes me seriously wonder if the ref is out for revenge -- or on the take.

From DCRTV.com: Red Shipley, DC area country and bluegrass radio personality and longtime host of "Stained Glass Bluegrass" on WAMU (88.5 FM), died of cancer Saturday night in Charlottesville, only weeks past retiring after his 25th WAMU anniversary on 9/16. The Pest's obit is here; a remembrance from a colleague is here. Requiescat in pace.

Got this link from [livejournal.com profile] montuos, [livejournal.com profile] orlacarey, and [livejournal.com profile] alphaggek and backtracked it a bit... turns out the composer is on LJ!
I am much amused by [livejournal.com profile] 1istener's song "My Boyfriend's Girlfriend (Isn't Me)" ... lyrics here.
