ecwoodburn (who got it from thenowhere, who got it from karjack, who got it from tibicina, who got it from bayushi. I also got it independently from icewolf010 who got it from elkor.
Short form: The Pretty Bird Woman House is a woman's shelter on the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota. Over a number of days, the house that the shelter was located in was vandalized, broken into, ransacked, and then set afire. No one was injured because the criminals deliberately chose to do these deeds when there would be nobody at the house to defend against the attacks on the property.
The grant the shelter was scraping by on requires that there be a physical building to shelter the women. For the shelter to continue operations they need a new place. They've found possible places to buy (for cheap, since property values are so depressed there), including one very close to a police station -- which is very useful because there are so few police on the res. But they don't have the blunt, and they came to the Daily Kos for help (which they had done once before for operating funds when the grant paperwork was still tangled in red tape).
Amnesty International will help with a fundraiser, but first, they have to raise at least 15 grand to prove that they're viable. It appears they may have made this nut already... but they still need to bring the final total to somewhere around $60K for the property, $10K for security improvements, and who knows what to replace the contents of the former house (which were either stolen, trashed in the ransacking, or destroyed in the fire).
