mid-January update, plus new icon
Jan. 16th, 2008 12:12 pmWhile this is not a GIP, I did use the icon solely for the purpose of showing it off -- an anime/standup crossover. Upon first seeing it I totally sporfled, then swiped it as soon as I could see straight again. The icon is created by, and ganked from,
cmzero, who implied it was free for ganking-with-credit where I found it (a comment thread in the
get_medieval archives).
It's now the middle of January, and when the update last left off, it was New Years Day. Some stuff has happened in the past two weeks, I guess...
Wednesday the 2nd, after some fun online conversations in the morning, I spent much of the afternoon setting up the new desktop machine with
killernurd. I went off to the barony meeting come evening, and was pulling into the library's parking lot when
montuos called me to tell me about her car accident. That kind of put a damper on the rest of the day, and most of Thursday and Friday as well. Thursday evening we listened to Bomb Shelter Radio, and
stefsoap was even able to listen (yay!). Friday evening,
pedropadrao and
sister_devora came over for "Dinner and DVDs" -- well, the DVDs part didn't pan out, as our TV was behaving oddly. This may be a result of its not having been used much at all in the last year and change. Still, we had a good time.
Got off to a slow start again on Saturday the 5th, but we wanted to sleep,
montuos wanted to wash her hair, and there were a couple of other pleasant interruptions before we finally headed off to Brunswick Games Day. Got to see many friends there, including many of those who been at the GrayMouse Inn on Tuesday and at
chez_turtle the previous Friday, plus Bruce and Cheryl and Hal (from FanTek) and
ext_42142 from
ludus_gaming. Played Race for the Galaxy (first time; won), TransEuropa (totally reamed, dead dead dead dead last), and AmuseAmaze (first time; won). Once we got home. we stayed up for some online chat, so it was late to bed and late to rise. That Sunday evening,
fuzzface00 came over; he's lending me a webcam for now, but with most of the programs that would use it we've had difficulties getting it to show any image except as very dark shadows.
The past 10 days have been a bit trying with respect to Dora Sue and other mundanities. Wednesday evening I helped Cheryl install operating systems on her new laptop; it came with Vista, which lasted about 5 seconds if I heard correctly, and I put XP and Xubuntu on it, dual-boot. Something appears to have gone wonky with the XP install, though -- that side can't see the laptop's Ethernet port at all, whereas the Linux side *can*. Thursday evening we went to dinner with
asaia and friends (including
blaisedec and
nostasia, and of course
killernurd, and I don't know if anyone else there does LJ) to give her a good send-off to ODU; she and Tony left Friday, first stop being the Northern Neck to visit with
ayrfield, who incidentally had managed to find a decent deal on two wheels and four tires for Dora Sue during the week.
This past Saturday featured many different 12th Night events that we didn't attend. Congratulations to
shalandara on her Golden Dolphin (at Atlantian 12N), and to
tessathehuntres on her Pelican (at Æthelmearc 12N)! And waves en passant to
giselle0002 on her way to Owlsherste. We met up with
draftwitch and her husband on Saturday afternoon, then after some semi-successful Retail Fu at the mall, we met up with
fuzzface00 and
ext_42142. Sunday was spent mostly at home, doing home-type stuff. This was punctuated by the call from
killernurd informing us that Annabell's left rear tire had finally given up the ghost about halfway between Norfolk and Kinsale; he got the dead tire off and put on the spare, but was highly suspicious of it given *its* crappy condition. It held air though, and he managed to limp back to
ayrfield which was his originally intended destination for the night.
Now, my father had had another tire for Annabell lying around (swapped out after its mate had a blowout), which he'd sent home with Tony after Christmas. So on Monday down on the Neck, Tony got that one mounted to replace the blown-out tire; he also obtained a used tire to replace the dying spare. He then loaded up Dora Sue's tires etc. and headed homeward. In the meantime I'd picked up a new axle for Dora Sue; when Tony got home we delivered all of these parts to Curry's so they could actually get Dora Sue fixed.
This month has been a very fragile month in general, and the past several days particularly so. A minor but significant part of this is that there are too many people I haven't seen in too long; in the next six weeks I should get to see some of those I'm missing (among other things, University of Atlantia, BMDL Carnivale, and Noisemakers, plus possibly Birka if the schedule allows it), but I doubt I'll get to see everyone in NJ/PA/DE/MD/DC/VA on my "miss you" list, much less anyone further away. *sigh*

Date: 2008-01-19 11:56 pm (UTC)I think I've only been at this for a little over a year and I'm slowly figuring out LJ handles. At first the idea of posting publicly terrified me (hence the large amount of memage). I'm not as easily outgoing as I sometimes act. :-) However I have quite a few friends in SF&F fandom who have LJ's and I enjoy keeping up with them. (Interestingly, I know
