Easter weekend wrapup
Mar. 26th, 2008 10:09 amThis past weekend was Easter weekend, which means lots and lots of singing, though I did take Saturday off for a local SCA event.
As usual, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday have a lot of singing. Thursday evening, the anthem was the American folk hymn "Saw Ye My Savior?" (arr. Johnson), and various choir members had solos on the verses of the Communion hymn "Stay With Me" (Taizé). It occurs to me that there was an awful lot of emphasis on the "suffering" part in this service, and not so much on community, Eucharist, and the great commandment, which was what I grew up with in both Catholic and Presbyterian traditions. This is further emphasized in the Episcopalian service by its ending: the stripping of the altar as Psalm 22 is read. Catholics don't strip the altar until after the service is over... and the service might not end until at least midnight, if the adoration is in the main sanctuary. Speaking of which, I did stop at a Catholic church on the way home, just not the "to the right of Attila the Hun" parish that's closest to Sharon Chapel. (Thanks to
nostasia for that quote. It appears to be accurate.)
Good Friday had four anthems, including the prelude and postlude:
"Behold the Lamb of God" -- Handel (from Messiah)
"Libera Me" -- Fauré (from Requiem)
"What Wondrous Love Is This" -- American folk hymn, arr. Rossi (sung by the higher voices)
"Vere Languores Nostros" -- de Victoria
After that service I came home and got my stuff ready for the SCA event on Saturday.
Saturday morning the alarm went off while it was still dark, which does not please me but I knew it was necessary. I garbed myself and we loaded things into Annabell and went to pick up
bronx_baroness, arriving only a couple of minutes late. Grabbed breakfast-like things and coffee, and headed south to Lake Anna Winery, the site for Defending the Gate VII / Stierbach Baronial Investiture that day. The morning went pretty smoothly.
siegfried1 trumpeted Her Majesty in for Morning Court; most of the court business was baronial stuff revolving around the changeover of Baron and Baroness, though it was amusing that His PrettyGoodness Flaithri got called into court *twice* before the Investiture -- once by Her Majesty, and once by Their Excellencies. The latter did *two* items of business with Flaithri so as not to have him called up yet again! Eventually Colum and Briana handed over the baronial coronets to the Queen, and took their leave. I joined Siegfried in the trumpet fanfare for Flaithri and Rhonwen's processional; they were then invested as Stierbach's new B&B. We also did a fanfare for the recessional at the end... and at some point we also improvised one, but I can't remember what we were asked to do the unplanned fanfare *for*!
At some point during the second half of Morning Court, Siegfried and I noticed (and tried thereafter to ignore, with no success) a couple of young ladies wearing pink fuzzy bunny ears standing on the fringe of Court and looking at the scene with amusement. They were obviously part of the bus tour that had come to the winery just before court started. We had been given advance notice of the bus tour, but only in general... many more of them were inside at the wine-tasting room, and kept coming up to the windows and looking out at us. Wearing the silly ears.
alina_s noticed them too -- I mean, they thought *we* were funny, and *they're* the ones wearing the pink fuzzy bunny ears. Go figure.
Lunch came next, and then a period of running around trying to get stuff done but not feeling like I'd accomplished much. We won some things at the Silent Auction. As that was ending we started to get rain spatters outside, so afternoon Court got moved inside. There followed a period of much confusion as tables got taken down or moved and chairs moved in and other Court stuff got moved in, while the Silent Auction folks tried to get everyone squared away. I helped separate the bidless items from those that hadn't been claimed, and helped find some of the winners. I only had to get up once in afternoon Court (for a new Golden Dolphin);
montuos received an Undine for her service as a retainer;
killernurd received a Fountain (in absentia) for his aid in transporting
bronx_baroness and her stuff during the reign. Many other awards were given out to well deserving gentles but I was not really keeping track. (After all, that's why I save the court reports after they are published!)
Once Court ended, we reset everything for feast. After discovering that there *was* a feast table seating chart (a fact that had apparently gone unannounced), I helped people find their tables and helped others find empty seats. The feast was extremely yummy; applause and Vivat! to
shalandara and her crew. Then we took down chairs and tables, cleaned up the hall, loaded up the van, and headed homeward. The day ended with a Divine Practical Joke which had us in stitches, as described in an earlier post, which you should go and read if you haven't seen it!
Easter Sunday morning saw me back at church. There were two anthems: "Mary, Mary" (Williams/Martin) at offertory and "Thine is the Glory" (Handel/Budry) at communion. The rest of the day did not go well.
Getting ready for Mudthaw this weekend. Note to
loosecanon: current plan is to get there as early as they'll let us in.
