For Western Christians, this past Sunday was Pentecost, celebrating the day that the Holy Spirit came and descended upon the apostles, and they started speaking in tongues. However, as we were reminded, it was NOT like the modern glossolalia associated with Pentecostals and other evangelicals. The modern stuff involves people speaking in odd languages nobody on earth can understand. The Biblical story involved the apostles speaking in such a manner that ALL could understand -- that they started to proclaim the Good News, and each person listening heard it in his/her primary language.

I was at Sharon Chapel for the service, and they did something I thought was very neat... at the end of the reading of the Pentecost story, members of the congregation got up one by one and repeated the first bit of the reading in a different language: Spanish, French, Hindi, Latin, Akan (Ghana), Russian, Italian, Swahili, and Biblical Greek. (There would have been a German rendition but the speaker got sick at the last minute.) During the sermon, the pastor made mention of this, and someone in the congregation said "I dunno, they all sounded like English to me..." (Yes, we all laughed.)
