1. Go To Mapquest.com
2. Click on Directions
3. Enter your Current Address and the Address of your Childhood Home (or at least the town if you don't remember the exact address)
4. Put the time and distance in a post like this.
5. Don't forget to repost these directions. (Not the door to door ones)
Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 2 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 246.63 miles
Except that nine times out of ten, if you use the directions they provided you can't come close to the estimated drive time. This is because the directions use the Beltway, I-95 and the New Jersey Turnpike, which no sane person would ever use unless it were truly necessary. If I were to travel to West Orange from Chantilly, I would go via Frederick, Harrisburg and Allentown. Not just because many cool people live on that route; it's also got more regular traffic flow by far.
Now, to get from Chantilly to Allentown, the directions are effectively correct, though I'd make some minor changes based on local intelligence and/or if we needed to gas up first (just a little, gas is usually cheaper in PA/NJ than it is here)...
Total Est. Time: 3 hours, 35 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 198.92 miles
And if I'm going to West Orange via Allentown...
Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 53 minutes
Total Est. Distance: 276.73 miles
Yes, 30 more miles, but no way is it 51 minutes longer -- they honestly think you're going to go any slower on US-15, I-81 and I-78 than on the Beltway and I-95? Ha. An extra 27 minutes, I could believe... and even then you're going in the dead of night. Daytime traffic on the Beltway and Turnpike is hopeless these days.
