Yesterday, I went up to Herndon. Aside from picking up bread from Great Harvest, I also stopped in at The Closet, a thrift store just down the street from the bakery. At the thrift store I scored some Farberware cooking utensil stuff (one pot with matching lid, plus one lid to a pot we already have) for a couple of bucks. AND I got an old-school (read: closed-loop handle) Pyrex measuring cup... for a quarter. Count me one satisfied shopper.

Whooo!

You like the closed-loop handle better? You know, I hadn't even really ever thought about the difference until you mentioned it just now, but you're right; my new Pyrex measuring cup is not identical to my mother's 25-year-old one. ^_^

Both [livejournal.com profile] montuos and I far prefer the closed-loop handle ones.

Now, the model I scored was one of the later closed-loop ones, with metric markings as well as English. That matches our other Pyrex measuring cups, acquired over the last 20+ years as and when we could find them. My mom's Pyrex measuring cups only have English measurement markings; I suspect they're older than me.

See, the modern ones are designed to stack efficiently in cabinets. The old-fashioned ones are designed to be used efficiently. Ever try to hold onto a thick handle that slants away from the bowl, using the dryest finger or two of a wet or greasy hand while you do something else with the other? And broadly rounded the entire way; there is nothing near the shoulder of that handle to give you a secure grip. Um, no thanks! Recipe for droppingness...

Hmmm. I wonder if any of my other friends up in the Boston area would be interested in opening a franchise.

I LOVE that little thrift store.

Back when I used to work for C3 (now Telos), I used to go there regularly.
I got a really UGLY short scale bass guitar from them. It's not working at the moment, but I still have it, and have plans for it that will put me one step closer to World Domination.

I also found excellent records, a record player I used for YEARS, some Legos, and lots of other great things there.

You prefer the closed-loop handles on Pyrex measuring cups?

Ah, I've just figured out why I like the other kind. I use a quart/liter-size one to heat water in the microwave, daily, for a French-press coffee-maker, and the closed-loop handle gets a wee bit too hot for comfort. And the pint-size one has a loop too too small for me to get enough fingers through.
