Random notes on the season

filkertom noted the possibility of snow showers today for Ann Arbor MI, and that while he is prepared to handle it, he's just not ready for winter yet. The same goes for me. I find that I prefer my winter in much smaller doses than I used to. It's not the *cold* I mind so much; it's the combination of cold and rain, and even more so *any* sort of frozen precipitation.
I suspect a lot of my lack of patience with winter weather these days stems from the fact that it's become a Major Inconvenience (tm). The office doesn't close because of the weather, and more than half the time *no allowances are made* for the fact that it will take everyone at least 2-3 times as long to get to the office simply due to the conditions. And that doesn't take into account the need to shovel one's way out from the house, or to shovel out the car[s]... and then have to deal with the 2 foot ice bump the plow leaves behind later. Shoveling out isn't the only havoc that winter weather wreaks on houses, either. Winter is a time when one notices distinct advantages to living in an apartment with easy access to rail transit from both home and office.
If I'm lucky we won't get much of messy weather around here any time soon, though. In the meantime the holly bush in the front yard is blooming. The blooms seem to release their scent mostly in the evening just after sunset; while I wonder why that is, it does make it very pleasant to walk past the holly, or even just to open the front door, at that time of day.
