First off: thanks (?) to author Robin McKinley, I have been pointed at yet another webcomic: Wondermark. You can find links to many of Robin's favorite Wondermark strips in this post and this other post, but two of her favorites resonate so much with me and my friends that I will share them directly...

For my bookaholic friends, which is to say, almost all of them: In which Beth keeps her Books.

And for those who like tea, here's one I have already shared with [livejournal.com profile] liadan_m and [livejournal.com profile] draftwitch and [livejournal.com profile] zephyrofgod and several others, and I hope one day they will forgive me: The Masters of Tea. Beware the amazingly snarky punchline, and as Robin herself said, "Do not drink your tea as you hit that link. I’m warning you."

By almost any metric, the "Christmas" season is now upon us, when I consider it kosher for malls and towns and houses to get decorated, and I can generally handle hearing holiday music. I don't consider the season to start until, at the very earliest, the first Sunday of Advent, which is always *after* Black Friday (and sometimes more than a week after!). But for general stuff, 1 December is my usual date for when it is permissible. Although I won't usually light my house until between St. Nicholas (6 December) and Santa Lucia (13 December), and the season lasts until Epiphany (6 January in Western churches). Of course, all this is dependent on the date of Christmas. And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wulfsdottir I present you with: How December 25 Became Christmas.

At Saturday night's (well, way early Sunday morning's) filk circle I kinda broke [livejournal.com profile] gorgeousgary with [livejournal.com profile] ebenbrooks's "It's the End of the 'Verse As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". He and [livejournal.com profile] starmalachite asked me for a link to the lyrics -- so here it is: click on the song title, everyone. And here is his link to his first live performance of the song.

SCAdians will appreciate this one that just came over the Merry Rose: a gift for your local Laurel who needs yet more Laurel bling.

Oh, you are evil. I want a print of that comic, the Shepherd holiday cards, and about 43 different T-shirts from that website! (But a print of that comic WILL have to happen. I neeeed it.)

I randomly check in at Wondermark, but it's never been in my regular list. I may need to change that. The book one is wonderful.

Don't get me started on Advent v Christmas today...I've had 3 different discussions this week, including as the topic of class last night. I am too much of a medieval.

When I worked at the Seminary Library we had a balancing act between Advent and when we put up Christmas decorations. The students (and faculty!) would complain that they were not up yet, even if we were still in full Advent season. Of course, classes were not operating during the actual Christmas season and we would be on reduced hours so few people would see them......

Since our youngest's birthday is Dec 7th, we never put up decorations until after he has had his celebration. Our kids have learned to not talk about XMas too much until after his birthday in respect for him. And seeing as how busy the month usually is, we are lucky to get the tree up before the 20th or so. And yes, we leave it up until 12th night, because they get a present on that day as well from the three kings.

My non-LJ sister has a daughter (my eldest niece) whose birthday is 19 December. *She* has three cousins on her dad's side with birthdays between 12 and 26 December. Their mutual grandmother has a *very* busy month! But they can't wait the decorations for anyone's birthday. (Especially the all=Jewish households.)

I transposed Robin McKinley for Ursula Vernon and expected penises daintily sipping tea.

Ironically, I hate tea. (I hate coffee, too, but that's another matter.) The only two teas I've been able to drink without problem are Aveda's tea and sassafras (with out safrole, of course).

I might just be a wee bit of a Southern belle. Maybe. Only without saying "bless their heart."
