97.5 (degrees Fahrenheit) at the weather station in our development that reports to wunderground.com ...
101 degrees at KIAD -- Dulles Airport, tying the record for this date (1988) ...
100 degrees at KDCA -- Reagan National Airport; the high for the day was 102, breaking the record of 99 (1991).
Ick.

How hot was it in New York City yesterday? Not quite hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, as Andy Newman and hit cohorts at the NY Times City Room found out... but hot enough to cook a tuna steak!

That report alone is enough to send me running for a cold-n-frosty beverage. Maybe one of these ancient recipes being released by Dogfish Head this summer. As one commenter on the blog pointed out: "Here's to the human race, getting wasted on whatever's handy since time immemorial!"

Heh heh heh.

I wonder whether they'd have had better luck using a shiny stainless steel frying pan instead of a black one. Granted, black absorbs heat, but the steel would reflect heat right back up into the egg.

My Dad used to say that the Army Air Corps guys used to fry eggs on the airplane wings when they were stationed in India during WWII. Honestly, the last couple of days, it's probably been as hot as India around here. And I think the planes flying The Hump had shiny wings.
