CIJF: day 1
Mar. 19th, 2005 12:34 amToday was the first day of the Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival. Well... got to the school about 2:30 (half an hour later than planned) and participated in the grand chaos of trying to get everything set up all at once. We had the somewhat unexpected aid of the personnel of both jazz bands -- they only got told yesterday that they had to stay after school to set up. While we all should have expected it, we didn't. It would have been nice of them to tell the kids (and the parents!) in advance. We also had the help of the Color Guard, which was slightly more expected because we knew they were running a bake sale outside the auditorium doors. I passed along the slightly adapted "I see a cookie/brownie/muffin shaped hole in your life..." line to them. They were amused, and may have even used it on some folks.
Once the first band was on stage, I went to pick up
montuos from work, took us both back to the school, listened to the Chantilly Workshop Jazz (in which
killernurd plays trumpet). One more big band after that, and the rest of the evening was small combos, which are logistically weird (how many mikes? where?) but don't involve moving many chairs or stands.
Tomorrow morning, drumline has to be there at oh-seven-hundred (to prep for their competition tomorrow, totally separate from JazzFest except for the space overlap while we move the drumline stuff out of the band room and onto the truck). The first jazz band arrives at 0730 and starts performing at 0830. So I will now do the sensible thing and go to bed.
