The 49-week town run begins
Aug. 23rd, 2006 06:51 pm(It's a week shorter than usual 'cos Pennsic starts a week earlier next year.) I returned from Pennsic on Sunday night and have gradually caught up with some online stuff. I am *NOT* going to try to go back and read 2-plus weeks of Friends Page archives though, so if there's anything you particularly want me to see, please leave a link to it in a comment. All comments are screened for this post.
I headed out on Saturday of Land Grab, with a semi-quick stop at Chez
kmusser/
zammis and another at the Sheetz in McKee PA. Arrived about 0200 on Sunday, and spent a while at Troll giving Brigette a back and shoulder rub. After sunrise, Cat and I set up the tent I was to use; then I spent most of the rest of Sunday and most of Monday morning doing inventory of the Chirurgeons Supply Trailer with Cat.
Monday afternoon through Friday evening, I split my time between working at Troll and working at Heralds Point, which was what I expected. Time was deliberately taken out of the schedule to help friends (including
liadan_m and
murasakinoyoroi) set up, and also to help
bunnyjadwiga set up the tent for
juergen and
maziemaus in anticipation of a late night arrival. Time was also taken out for
herveus and Megan's 25th wedding anniversary celebration on Tuesday the 8th, which was most enjoyable.
Then came what Troll affectionately calls "Hell Weekend", wherein I did almost no Troll due to the presence of
montuos at her very first Pennsic (for middle weekend only). I did manage to be at Troll on Friday when she showed up; I trolled her in and promptly left to take her to our camp, and then to find people. Went to bed relatively early (for Pennsic); woke up about 0300 when
juergen and
maziemaus got through on the cellphone to let us know they had arrived. Went to Troll to lead them down to their camp, unloaded, then the three of us took both their van and ours out to Kishnev to park. The late night led to sleeping pretty late into the morning; this would turn into something of a motif for the rest of the war, which curtailed my doing the usual mornings at Troll. Awake times over the weekend were spent showing
montuos around when I wasn't needed at a practice or a meeting, which was expected. Sunday afternoon we went to
liadan_m's tea, where we met many people with many LJ handles (and some without), and it was nice to meet all of them. Then
montuos had to leave for home, so we trudged out to Kishnev to retrieve Moishe; she packed up and headed out, and I went to choir practice.
Much of the rest of the war was spent at Heralds Point and at Known World Choir rehearsal; not enough at Troll, and not enough time seeing people -- but there just isn't enough time at Pennsic to do it all. There were unhappy times, there were good times. The Choir concert went really well. Heralds Point broke last year's record for number of clients seen. The Known World Heralds Party seemed to go well, though I spent a chunk of it at the Clan Cambion Scotch Tasting party instead (&^%$#@! overlapping parties, but that again is normal). Alisoun's party kind of morphed into a brainstorming session due to events that occurred earlier in the day. Clan Cambion's Celtic Happy Hour was a blast (and then I went to an apprenticing ceremony which featured even more partying).
And then it was Friday, and lots of people seemed to be packing up and leaving -- perhaps spooked by a vaguely ominous weather forecast, but nothing like the forecast which sparked the Great Pennsic 33 Exodus of two years ago. (*That* exodus was warranted; eight inches of rain in 14 hours followed.) So Friday evening looked more like midday Saturday in an ordinary Pennsic, and Saturday afternoon looked like Sunday morning. It was eerie. Friday night we did get some rain, but not a lot; the Troll Party was a bit subdued, but activity at Heralds Point was still going on afterwards. Saturday was hot and humid with only occasional sprinkles, though the Pittsburgh and Cranberry areas to the south got hammered by a *very* impressive thunderstorm.
wanderingpixie and I finished packing up Heralds Point, then went to pack up my stuff, and then to pack up her camp once she found out she was going home Saturday evening. She graciously offered the use of her spare bed, and far more importantly her bathroom... featuring a shower with hot water (not so important in the circumstances) and real water pressure (*FAR* more important!!).
Sunday morning I headed back up to Pennsic to finish packing up. Clear skies and brisk winds were the order of the day; the winds combined with my poor judgment to create one Flying Pavilion, but thankfully the overall damage was relatively small. I also helped clean up the First Aid pavilion (or whatever folks wanted to call it by then), and headed home mid-afternoon right behind
stitchwhich. Got home about 2230.
To everyone I saw at Pennsic, it was great to see you all. To the couple of folks I missed, well, dangit, and I hope I can see you again soon. For me, this was a better Pennsic than last year. Next year, anticipating different circumstances, I may limit the time I spend at the war; maybe get there on Middle Friday and stay until the following Friday, or maybe forego Pennsic Choir and leave on Wednesday. It's really too far in advance to tell yet.
