This story was first told to me in 6th grade, by someone who heard her little brother ask the question. I am given to understand that young kids in the west/southwest area of Allentown PA (the area covered by my dad's church) still ask it every spring.

Southwest of Allentown is the town of Emmaus. (Which appears to be 3 miles from everywhere. But I digress.) Emmaus, like Nazareth and Bath and some others, was named after the Biblical location. Which brings us to the amusing story:

This coming Sunday (3 Easter) is also known as Emmaus Sunday. A parent is telling the children that it's traditional on that day to read the Gospel story (Luke 24:13-35) of Jesus meeting two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. After a short pause, the younger child asks: "Did Jesus meet them on Lehigh Street or Cedar Crest Boulevard?"

Strangely enough, most kids that age on that side of Allentown don't think too much about Emaus Ave.

Hahahahahaha!!!! That's priceless! ;D

When I lived up in the Valley area, I had to constantly correct my Southern NJ friends' pronunciation - to them, it was Ee-mouse. Wha'?! ;D

yeah really, WTF... although the local community paper (East Penn Free Press) used to have cartoons featuring "E. Mouse" ... so perhaps the confusion is more widespread than we think.
